Women’s Reproductive Rights News Alert: Planned Parenthood purchases West Ashley facility

In case you missed it, Planned Parenthood has purchased the Charleston Women’s Medical Center in West Ashley, a facility that has been the only place in the area where a woman could seek an elective abortion.

Planned Parenthood, owns 2 clinics in SC but doesn’t offer abortions at its current Charleston location. They will begin doing so when the newly owned facility opens in December. The Charleston Women’s Medical Center closed on November 13th so there is not currently a center offering elective abortions in the Lowcountry.

Jenny Black, CEO of Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, said the new facility will be larger and more accessible, offering expanded education and community engagement programs. It will continue to provide cancer screenings, Pap tests, STD testing, and treatment, along with other women’s health services. “Planned Parenthood South Atlantic is committed to providing essential care that South Carolinians rely on, no matter what,” she said.
