The Issue: After shamelessly refusing to consider President Obama’s nomination of Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court, Senate Republicans now want to rush through the confirmation of whomever President Trump nominates to replace Justice Ginsburg.
As chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Senator Lindsey Graham is responsible for deciding when the Senate will begin the process of confirming a new Justice.
In 2016, Senator Graham said that if he became Judiciary Committee chairman, he would not proceed with the confirmation process for a Supreme Court justice in the late stages of President Trump’s first term. To watch Graham’s statement click here.
What you can do: Please contact Senator Graham by phone (202-224-5972) or email. Tell him to wait until after a newly-elected President takes office in January before considering a nominee to the Supreme Court.
What you could say to Senator Graham:
• In 2016 you said that if you become chairman of the Judiciary Committee and a seat opens on the Supreme Court in the last year of President Trump’s term, the Senate would wait until after the next election to fill that vacancy. You should keep your word.
• If you respect the wishes of the majority of citizens nationwide, if you want to win back some of the voters who remember the Senator Graham from before the Trump presidency, if you care about your legacy, and if you want to set an example on a matter of paramount importance to maintaining fundamental democratic values, you will not proceed with the confirmation process to replace Justice Ginsburg until after the 2021 inauguration.
Please encourage your friends to also contact Senator Graham.
