Time is running out to guarantee that everyone in South Carolina can vote safely on November 3, 2020, while we are still in the midst of Covid-19. The SC Legislature is reportedly scheduled to convene a session on September 2, 2020.
Please contact Governor McMaster (803-734-2100) and ask him to work with the General Assembly to quickly put in place a temporary measure that allows all registered voters to vote absentee on November 3, 2020. Prompt action is necessary because voters need time to apply for and receive their absentee ballot applications.
You can also contact Senator Campsen and encourage him to sponsor the necessary legislation for the November election as he did for the June primary. Our House representative, Spencer Wetmore, has informed us that passing this bill is her number one priority.
In an excellent op-ed in the Post and Courier on August 28, 2020, State Senator Marion Kimpson says the state Legislature should:
1. Immediately pass legislation expanding absentee voting to all eligible voters for the November election.
2. Expand the deadline so that ballots can be counted as long as they are postmarked by November 3, 2020.
3. Waive the absentee ballot witness requirement.
